learning disabilities and mental disorders






Ellen Says: You know Lawrence, you are definitely right about what you said in your post regarding children suffering from epilepsy. This disorder makes me come to mind the sad plight of those kids who are suffering from mental disorders, learning disabilities and mental retardation which definitely are not usually classified as primarily neurological.

However, the distinction can be a matter of some debate, either in regards to specific facts about the cause of a condition or in regards to the general understanding of brain and mind.

Furthermore, the definition of disorder can be contested in regard to what is considered abnormal, dysfunctional, harmful or unnatural in neurological, evolutionary, psychometric or social terms, if you know what I mean.

While certain types of mental condition are not usually classified primarily as neurological disorders, and certain types of brain disorders are not usually classified primarily as mental conditions, there are now an array of basic sciences that deal with the continuum between the neural and the mental, including subspecialities of psychology and neuroscience such as neuropsychology, cognitive neuropsychology or cognitive (thought) neuroscience, affective (emotion) neuroscience, behavior neuroscience (also known as biopsychology), social neuroscience, and neurophenomenology (subjective experience and consciousness).

There is always help for kids - I think transcendental meditation has shown to be effective in treating a wide range of problems in people of all ages. Light sound technology - specifically brainwave entrainment has also show to help kids with various learning disabilities. It has helped me improve my focus; it also appears to my brains ability to process information which is always a good thing! I have entrainment tehcnology botht the mind spa and a software programme on my computer. I was thinking of using the latter to researhc the effects on kids or adults who consider themselves learning disabled!
