everything you wanted to know about drug rehabilitation but were anxious to ask...

AJ says: Life is tough and it gets tougher with it having to face the difficult issues of addiction. It is such a crucial issue in our society that every mother and father of a son or daughter in every household are indeed struggling to make a great effort to address the issue of addiction. The only and ultimate way to resolve this worsening problem is rehabilitation and drug treatment.

The case of alcohol and drug addiction is such an overwhelming problem in all the sectors of our society that all must get involved with the fight against it. One of which is undergoing drug treatment program that should address both the physical and psychological dependency of the person involved in addiction of such substances.

What could be the most effective means to combat alcohol and drug addiction? Initially, behavioral and social symptoms may need to be given attention before the victim can be truly rehabilitated. Specific procedures must be taken into account to help the victim sustain his/her rehabilitation and recovery for the remainder of his/her life. Hence, complete detoxification and sustained avoidance of the substances are absolutely required for such effective recovery.

It should be noted that successful addiction treatment involves changing behaviors to remove the addiction and avoid relapse. Because recovery from drug addiction is a long-term process and requires multiple episodes of treatment, it is an utmost importance to identify the key elements to an effective rehabilitation.

Detoxification is the first step because drugs can take awhile to fully leave the system especially if the victim has built up a level of physical tolerance from it. Some may appear to function normally even with the long-term use of strong drugs. So, medical supervision will help minimize withdrawal from drugs through the use of anti-addictive drugs or other treatments. Weekend programs won’t make it as a long term program will be the right process to absolutely help the victim through the entire cycle of detoxification.

Likewise, it has been noted that self-detoxification has little impact on long term drug addiction. That's why vigilance must be observed to prevent drug use during the entire treatment. Also, rehabilitation programs should treat all the needs of an addict, not just the drug abuse. Victims may have other medical or mental health problems that need treatment, so much so that counseling and behavioral therapies must be conducted to the victim for an effective rehabilitation. Most significantly, a treatment needs to fit the victim and make it adaptable as the victim's needs change.

The proven achievements of treatment programs are seen in victims with long histories of abuse which were manifested in an impaired social functioning, and criminal activities. Thus, drug rehab then, must start with a six to twelve month stay at a special treatment facility. The objective of this is to remove the victim from their environment and fully prepare them to create and function in a drug-free atmosphere that will support their ongoing recovery.

The moment an early stage of withdrawal have passed, the victim begins a supervised treatment program that addresses psychological dependency and imparts behavioral and social skills that will help them function without the substance. This may involve individual, family, or group counseling. There will also be occupational and behavioral therapies to re-teach life and social skills to the victim as these may have been lost or never learned while under the influence of addiction. Some programs may include community service, physical exercise, art involvement, and wilderness activities as part of their overall treatment. They can also be offered therapies involving horseback riding or martial arts.

In very remote and special cases, criminal and or educational needs may need to be incorporated in a rehabilitation program. Court and other legal appearances may be required. Minor victims may need to make arrangements to complete schooling while receiving treatment. Continuing vocational and even college education can be provided to older victims as well.

At the outset, all key factors that contribute to the cycle of addiction must be addressed for the rehabilitation to become effective and an extensive treatment program is the most effective way to ensure successfully recovery.
