Strictness can last a lifetime

Ellen says: Parents must impose standards of behavior on their children to keep them safe and to teach their values. However the standards should not be anymore strict than is necessary. Limiting children's freedom in too harsh a manner teaches a lifelong lesson that they are under tight control, have few options, and cannot think for themselves. Children must be given enough space to make some mistakes and learn from lessons from that so they will feel that the direction of their life is something they chose.

Rinzo, my hubby grew up in a military household. His father was a diciplinarian. " You didn't anything he hadn't approved. And everything you did, you did well. Strickness doesn'nt even cover it. There just wasn't a lot of being a kid in my childhood." according to him.

And yet in a world where children are subject to all numbers of bad influences. Rinzo couldn't help but feel some respect of his father had taken. He found that his own parenting style was similar to what he had experienced as a child. He wonders if his parenting style might have undermined his children self determination. " You look at what you've done for them or maybe to them, and you have to ask if there might have been a better way."
