July is Cord Blood Awareness Month

Ellen says:Let us join hands and be a part of Cord blood awareness month. It is very important to have a concrete knowledge of saving the cord. We can help other people in the future in treating diseases with stem cells.

In Treating Diseases with Stem Cell we should know how important to save the baby's cord blood. Because umbilical cord stem cells are known to treat 70 diseases, including leukemia, anemia, lymphoma, diabetes and cerebral palsy. And about 30,000 people a year are diagnosed with a disease that can be treated with cord blood stem cells. It is said that by the year 2015, there will be 10,000 cord blood transplants world-wide per year using publicly banked cord blood.

The Value of Cord Blood or umbilical cord blood, should never be understated as it is the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta at the time of birth. This blood has typically been discarded following delivery. But once scientists discovered it was a rich source of stem cells, umbilical cord blood became a viable substitute to bone marrow in thousands of successful transplants. Stem cells from umbilical cord blood are usually used to treat in a brother or sister or in child who would otherwise not have a stem cell donor.

Some parents choose to have cord blood banked, because it can be used later if the child has a condition that would require a bone marrow transplant. Cord blood banking is the storing of the stem cells collected from the cord blood over a prolonged period of time. Most hospitals routinely collect cord blood at birth, since it is relatively convenient and birth is the only time it is possible to do. Cord blood can be used to re-constitute the immune system in place of a transplant and doesn't require a search for a compatible donor.

Cryo-Cell is one of the world’s largest and most established family cord blood banks with over 150,000 clients worldwide.
